We recommend the use of doulas, especially for first time parents, to aid with labor support. Doulas are professionally trained labor support providers experienced in giving encouragement, emotional support, and concrete suggestions for comfort in labor. Doulas do not replace the support of birth partners, in contrast, they are experts at decreasing birth partner anxiety and helping birth partners to provide more effective support.
