I am excited to offer intrauterine insemination (IUI) services in the comfort and privacy of your home. At BirthRoot, the midwifery model of care is applied to your conception process. The ability to conceive in the privacy and comfort of your home, the power to choose who attends your insemination, and the right to receive gentle and respectful care are incredible supports to becoming pregnant. Being at home for your insemination can greatly reduce stress surrounding the process; if you are relaxed, you are more likely to get pregnant. Inseminating at home is a great option for those who wish to conceive using donor sperm but who prefer a less medicalized experience. If you are working with a doctor or fertility clinic, home IUI with BirthRoot can be a backup for those times when the office or clinic is closed or over-booked. I would be honored to assist you and your growing family to become more informed about your options, to get in sync with your natural cycles, to closely listen to your body’s messages, and to support your journey towards parenthood.

IUI is a safe, gentle procedure that happens in the comfort of your home. The procedure is similar to a Pap smear—a speculum is used to visualize the cervix and then a thin, plastic catheter is inserted into the cervix, passing into the uterus in order to perform the insemination. This event is yours: it can be romantic, fun, spiritual, private, quiet, or celebratory. Partners are welcomed to participate in whatever way feels most comfortable to them. At-home intrauterine insemination with a natural cycle is appropriate as long as you’re healthy and do not have any known fertility problems.

How It Works
There are two options for receiving home insemination services with BirthRoot Midwifery.

  1. You can sign up for a Fertility Care Package which includes two in-person appointments and three months of follow-up email and/or phone support (ask me for more details if interested). This option helps address your unique needs and provide you with appropriate information, resources, and ongoing support. Follow-up support is provided over the course of several months to review your menstrual cycle charts, update your conception timing plan as needed, review and address lab results, and discuss any ongoing concerns or questions.

  2. You can choose to just receive insemination services. In this case you would need to schedule a separate intake appointment before the cycle when you plan to do IUI. This visit includes an assessment of your personal and family health history, current health status, review of previous labwork (if applicable), review of menstrual cycle charts, and discussion of options and choices related to working with a known sperm donor or sperm bank (if applicable).

In both cases, I will work with you to monitor your body’s fertility signs so that we can optimally time your insemination. Together, we’ll create an individualized plan for getting you pregnant. When you are nearing your ovulation window, and the timing is right, I will come to your home to perform the insemination. For home intrauterine insemination (IUI) services, you will arrange for your frozen, washed sperm sample to be there at the same time. I can also perform intracervical (ICI) or intravaginal (IVI) inseminations using fresh known donor sperm. You and/or your partner(s) can be as involved in the process as you want to be.

Rates of pregnancy with IUI are similar to, or slightly lower than, rates of pregnancy in heterosexual couples who are trying to conceive through intercourse. A well-timed IUI with frozen sperm gives you an 8-15% chance of becoming pregnant each cycle. If two inseminations are done per cycle, the chances increase. Over time, there is about an 80% chance of success after 3-6 IUI cycles (read more here).
